Tuesday, January 3rd: WELCOME BACK!
Today, we will start your portfolio by reviewing information about this class and my expectations of you.   You and your parent should read these, let me know if you have questions, and most importantly, sign and return the last page of Handout C to me BY FRIDAY!

3)  Watch this funny commercial to understand why your ability to make an arguement in an intelligent way is something you should strive to acheive in this class! What is wrong with HER arguement?
4) We will work on getting to know all the students in our class, will an "interview" activity in which you will introduce someone else to the class!
Wednesday, Jan 4th

3)  Ways to Succeed in my class and in life discussion, using this Prezi to help you learn by example!
4)  Take notes on where things are around the room to avoid feeling lost (at the same time demonstrating to me you have learned good note-taking skills!)


Thursday, Jan 5th
POP QUIZ! You will be able to use what's in your portfolio now to take this uber simple quiz.
1) Discuss what is meant by "context clues".  What do you think people mean by "context is everything?"
2) Watch this video on how our perception of things can influence our learning.  Answer the 3 questions below on your notes "D" from yesterday...add to it.  (How not to be lost in Ms. Thrower's class)
--What does the speaker mean when he says “there is not inherent meaning in information, it’s what we do with the information that matters.”

--Why are you able to read the sentences with missing letters?

--After the desert scene activity, what do you think the speaker means by “your brain is learning”?
3) View this Powerpoint on Perception and Learning.   Discussion on how your past experiences can influence your ability to learn (good or bad)

Happy Friday!  Today, you will be working on a Webquest activity, which includes ME learning about YOU and also, your first vocabulary assignment due MONDAY!

Monday, Jan 9th
1. Discuss your personality test "locus of control" from Friday's library work.
2. Watch Schoolhouse Rock "No More King" and discuss WHY the British colonized America and WHAT "No Taxation Without Representation" meant to the British colonists living in the 13 colonies.
3. Watch Part I of "The Story of Us: Jamestown" and "Plymouth" and complete this viewing guide (#2 in notebook).
4. Complete this map activity (#3 in notebook) by following the directions.  Use Class Notes slide 15 to get this information.


Tuesday, Jan 10th
1. Vocabulary date has been extended due to a need for sentence RE-WRITES! Show meaning! (#6 in notebook)
2. Use relief maps and your brain to answer this handout. (#4). 
3. Complete the back side of handout #4, and include a short definition of each term and a graphical interpretation of the term.
4. Watch Part II "Story of Us" and answer questions on the viewing guide (#5).  You will need to view these clips to answer: 1768 and  Boston Massacre

1. Bell Ringer Discussion: What documents or people do YOU think influenced my classroom rules?
2. Note-taking (#7) over the types of documents and people that influenced the American colonists using this Prezi to guide you.
3. Show Me What You Know About the notes you just took! (#8)


Thursday, Jan 12th
1. Work in pairs to research a term off this American Revolution timeline.  (#9).   If you miss class, YOU are responsible to use my online Class Notes or the internet to research each of these and complete page 2 of the handout.  Show me what you've learned by the notes you take.

Friday, Jan 13th (eek!)

1. Work on this vocabulary remediation to replace your grade on the #6 Vocab 1.1. 

2. Spot check portfolios and decorate your folder for your portfolios!

Tuesday, Jan 17th

1. Discuss a time in YOUR life you had to "break free" from someone. How did you do it?

2. Cornell Notes:  Use Cornell Notes style paper to view this Prezi and answer the following questions.  (#10 in notebook)

  • What was the goal of the delegates at the First Continental Congress?
  • What happened at the Second Continental Congress?
  • What was the purpose of the document “the Articles of Confederation”?
  • What was the Northwest Ordinance?

Here's a great video of what happened at the Second Continental Congress?

3. Use textbook (or internet) to read and answer these questions over the Declaration of Independence primary source document.

Wednesday, Jan 18

1. Class discussion on who you believe is better suited to punish students at Southeast Raleigh (teachers or Mr. Wall). 

2. Use the opinions learned in that discussion to understand the reasons why the Articles of Confederation were setup the way they were and then take notes over this Prezi (#11 in notebook) to understand the pros and cons of this document.

3.  Discuss and complete this handout (#12) over the 5 Principles Found in Our United States Constitution.

Thursday, Jan 19

1. Discuss what it means to COMPROMISE!

2. Fill out the handout (#13) by watching all of this Prezi over the Compromises at the Constitutional Convention.

3. Read this article about the debate between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists and complete this Venn Diagram in DETAIL! (Venn is #14) in your notebook

Friday, Jan 20

1. Review and then take Unit 1 Test.

2. When finished, turn in portfolio #1 through #15 (review sheet completed) and then work on this vocabulary assignment (#2 in your new Unit 2 notebook)...which will be your homework if you don't finish it.

***HONORS TEST PROJECT AND OPTIONAL EXTRA CREDIT FOR ACADEMIC STUDENTS!  Download this and complete ONE of the squares for a test grade.  BE CREATIVE...don't "half *ss it!"   Due Friday, 28th!

Monday, Jan 23

1. Get portfolios back and review ways to improve that grade next time!

2. Watch this video rap to see if you know you're rights!  Don't get taken advantage of!

3. Read the actual Bill of Rights and complete the summary notes sheet as notes.   Use pages 5 and 6 of this pdf file to complete this. Label this #3 in your notebook.

Wednesday and Thursday: Feb 1st and 2nd

Begin 2 Day Research in the Media Center.   This final project is DUE MONDAY for a TEST grade, but we are only working on it as a class today and tomorrow in the Media Center.   What you don't finish tomorrow is homework for MONDAY.

1. Go over Unit 2.1 Test and practice critical reading AND thinking.

2. Watch Schoolhouse Rock "3 Ring Circus"...our government!  Start discussing the Executive Branch. 

3. Use graphic organizer to note-take over the 7 Roles of the President.   Use this Prezi to take your notes.   Use page 7 of this file to download the graphic organizer.  This will be #2 in your new portfolio for Unit 2.2.

On the back of this graphic organizer, make sure to take notes answering the following questions:  (see Class Notes page for more detail)

  • What are the requirements to become President of the United States?
  • Who elects the President?  (hint: not the people!...refresh your mind!)
  • What amendment dealt with Presidential Succession and what is it?
  • How long is a term?
  • What is the President's salary?
  • What is a Presidential Cabinet?

Thursday, Feb 9: Meet in Media Center

1. Today and tomorrow will be spent working on this project to show your understanding of Congress and the job that they do for us.  Follow all directions and have completed by end of day Friday.   Friday is EARLY RELEASE so use your time wisely.

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY:  If you have time and want to use Microsoft Publisher to create a "Wanted: Job Ad" for the next President of the United States, I will replace any "exempt" grade with a 100%.   Must include 3 requirements for President, some of the duties (use your 7 roles as hints), and must be colorful and creative.   Due by end of next week.

Friday, Feb 10

Complete work on Facebook Vocab Project and turn in printed in black and white or color.  USE THE WORDS CORRECTLY!

Monday, Feb 13th

1. Get portfolios and Supreme Court Case Research projects back and discuss some of your interesting case findings!

2. Notes (#5) Over "How a Bill Becomes a Law" and the process in Congress.  If you miss class, take notes over slides 2 through 24 of the Class Notes on your own paper.

3. Watch "The Congress" and complete this viewing guide. (#6)

HONORS ONLY ASSIGNMENT: Complete this handout by Wednesday of this week.  Be detailed on specific in your arguement.  Examples, examples!

Tuesday, Feb 14th

1. Bell Ringer: What is this political cartoon on gerrymandering trying to say?

2. How does the legislative branch raise money for all the things we need our government to provide for us?  Answer: TAXES!  Fill in the notes by using this 2 page document. (#7)

3. With all these taxes, how does the Executive Branch use this money to help its citizens and "execute" or enforce our laws?  Answer: With many of these Executive Branch Federal Agencies.   Use the guided notes sheet and this Prezi to fill in the blanks.
